Beyond Our Rap Sheet (Cont.)
Court Room Exhibitions
The “aspirational self-portraits” created in the YNY 1-Day program. In the portraits, participants collage photographs of themselves with animals and symbols that represent their personal strengths and aspirations. The artworks are presented at the participants’ final court date to an audience of judges, prosecutors, and other courtroom professionals—a public space in which their voices are rarely heard.
When participants stand before the judge, the portraits are presented to provide a window into the young people’s lives and aspirations, beyond their rap sheets and thereby advocate for a positive individual case outcome, most often the dismissal and sealing of their adult case. The larger goal is to gradual transform courtroom cultures.
